Foothill College / CS49 / Welcome Aboard!
This is a fantastic quarter to dive into CS49! We are celebrating two years of offering this course in collaboration with Stanford University, utilizing their Code in Place platform. During that time, we’ve worked hard to evolve the curriculum based on student feedback to make this our best version yet. I’m thrilled to have you here, congratulations on taking this first step, and welcome aboard!
My name is Lane Johnson, and I will be your Foothill instructor. This course is a unique and exciting adventure, and I want to provide you with some important context for how the term will proceed.
Course Dates and Logistics
Course Duration: This is a 10-week, late-start course. It officially begins Monday April 20, 2026 and runs through Friday June 26, 2026.
Canvas Access: Our course site will be available by Monday April 20 and hopefully sooner. You can find login instructions here.
Format: This is a "W" modality (online asynchronous) course, but it includes a required weekly synchronous meeting called "Section."
The "Secret Sauce": Section Meetings
CS49 is made possible through a collaboration with Stanford University. We utilize their Code in Place teaching, learning, and coding platform to support a unique instructional model, the heart of which is weekly section meetings.
Each week, you will meet synchronously via Zoom with a small group of classmates. These sessions are led by a dedicated volunteer section leader, often a past or current Foothill student. These meetings are designed to be collaborative working sessions where you apply what you are learning.
Section Duration:
Required: One hour of synchronous, collaborative work.
Optional: An additional 30 minutes of support immediately following the first hour, where you can stay on to ask questions or get additional help and mentoring.
Your First Task
By the end of the first day of the course (Monday April 20), your primary task will be to sign up for a section time.
Action Required: You will need to complete the section time survey by Monday April 20 by 11:59 PM as we will have our first section meetings in week 1 as well!
Schedule Structure: Sections generally take place Wednesday through Saturday. This allows you to consume the course content in the first part of the week and leverage that knowledge in section during the second half of the week.
The available section times this quarter will be:
* Wednesdays 7pm
* Thursdays 7pm
* Fridays 11am
* Saturdays 10am
Canvas will be your starting point for the course, and from there you will be directed to the Code in Place platform where this course will be delivered.
